UAM-IBM Centre was created in 1972 with the purpose of developing applied research projects such as image processing or automatic text processing.
In the 1980s, the rise of expert systems led the UAM-IBM Centre to start researching on applications of these systems at company level.
In early 1989, IBM Spain and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), collaborating with the Computer Science and New Technologies Board of the Ministry of Industry and Energy, approved a plan to create an institution for Knowledge Engineering, and presented it to several leading companies.
In June 1989, Asociación para el Desarrollo de la Ingeniería del Conocimiento (ADIC) was established, integrated by Banco Español de Crédito, Banco Hispano Americano, Iberia, El Corte Inglés IT, INH-Repsol, IBM, RENFE, Tabacalera, Unión Eléctrica Fenosa and UAM.
The first mission of this non-profit association was establishing an institute to achieve the goals of transmitting and transferring technology better.
On July 4th, 1989, the association signed the constitution agreement for the creation of Instituto de Ingeniería del Conocimiento (IIC).
Enterprises, University and Government Administration joined forces to create a centre to cover the whole cycle from basic research to technology transference to society, representing a paradigm of collaboration in our country. The purpose was to promote the application of Knowledge-Based Systems to business environments and join forces to make advances in this leading-edge scientific field with good future prospects.
Nowadays
Some 25 years later our focus is still on working and supporting innovation and development of applications based on the knowledge provided by data and applied research, under the protection of the current ADIC partners (IBM España, Grupo Santander and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) and the direction of Alberto Barrientos, who counts on a long professional career and a rich experience in Consultancy and Sales on the Industry, Telecommunications and Utilities sectors, as well as in the Public Sector.

IIC is a private non-profit organization devoted to R&D+i and self-financed with the profits of our products and solutions that are reinvested in R&D+i.
